Renewable Heat Incentives

The Domestic Renewable Heat Incentive (Domestic RHI)

The RHI, which has been running for several years was given a much needed boost to promote the use of Renewable heating and Hot Water systems. This is good news especially when combining an Air Source Heat Pump with Solar PV to off set running costs.

Consumers switching to hot water and or heating systems that use eligible energy sources can help the UK reduce its carbon emissions and meet its renewable energy targets. Subsidies were increased in Spring 2017 and although there are now heat demand limits on the amount a Domestic consumer can receive the payments per kWh have increased.

People who qualify can receive quarterly payments for seven years for the amount of clean, green renewable heat or hot water that their system is estimated to produce. For more information on how to apply follow the link here

Current RHI Tariffs by Technology

Pence per kWh:

Air Source Heat 10.85 pence p/kWh
Ground Source Heat Pumps 21.16

The heat demand limits will be set at 20,000kWh for ASHPs, 25,000kWh for biomass boilers and stoves and 30,000kWh for GSHPs. However, this will not disqualify properties with higher heat demands from applying to the scheme. There will be no heat demand limit for solar thermal.

There is also a Non-Domestic RHI for business owners - please contact us for more information.

We were spending over 3000 a year on Oil and switched (to be more environmentally friendly) to an Air Source Heat Pump. We off set the cost of running the Heat Pump with Solar PV. It's early days to see how much we are saving but we are earning over 1000 a year in incentives and we are on the lower FiT rate for our Solar due to the age of the property.
